Race: The inhabitants of Flumenara are the Flumera, humanoid creatures with aquatic adaptations such as gills and webbed extremities. Their skin reflects the colors of the waterfall at varying heights, with royals bearing a pinkish hue to represent their lineage's closeness to the night sky, and the Great Basin natives having a white skin color resembling the waterfall's foam. Their clear vision amidst constant water spray is due to highly adapted eyes. One can tell their age by the length and color of their luminescent Mohawk fins that flow from the back of their heads, each signifying an individual's life journey down the waterfall.
Geography and Temporal Dynamics: Flumenara, the country of cascading water, spans across a waterfall so vast it nearly reaches space. Its terrain is as diverse as its inhabitants, with rocky cities perched at varying heights, a royal castle at the top, and the tranquil Great Basin below, marking the waterfall's end. However, the geography of Flumenara is not just spatial but temporal. Each city, placed at a different point on the waterfall, exists in its own unique temporal reality, shaped by the flow of knowledge and culture.
Cities: Flumera cities nestle on rocks within the waterfall, with each city having a unique layout. They're designed to thrive in constant wet conditions, with buildings crafted from coral-like materials. Amongst the roar of the waterfall, sacred rooms with slow-flowing water films on their walls provide rare, serene sanctuaries. The concept of where a city is located on the height of the waterfall holds little significance to the common folk. As they just live their lives without ever knowing another city. On the higher cities, the fact that they are higher, are more dear to them specially for the noble families, but for the majority of Flumenara people, it’s irrelevant.
The cities closer to the top are steeped in the past, holding tightly to traditions and the earliest teachings of Fluorism. Their residents, living at the precipice of Flumenara's flow of time, are the custodians of history, maintaining age-old customs, stories, and rituals with pride and precision. We have castles, nobles, and a medieval dynamic permeating the cities.
As one travels downwards, one observes a gradual shift. With the descent, traditions loosen their grip, replaced by novel ideas and advancements that tumble down from city to city. By the time one reaches the cities nearer the basin, the texture of society has significantly evolved.
The lower cities, being the "most recent in the timeline", are considerably more technologically advanced. Here, innovations in science, technology, and social structures are common, driven by a blend of wisdom trickling down from above. However, this comes with a shift away from rigid traditions, offering a society that's in constant flux, mirroring the waters that surround it.
This unique geographical and temporal duality creates a fascinating tapestry of cultures and eras within Flumenara, with each city contributing a distinct thread to the larger narrative.
Language: The Flumerian language, known as Fluorish, evolved from the original Aqualect dialect, adapting and flourishing alongside the Flumera's unique cultural and environmental realities. Inhabiting a world constantly in motion, the Flumera developed a language reflective of their singular experience and worldview. Fluorish contains four distinct temporal concepts, named as "Rivus' Factum," "Aqua Presentia," "Cascade Futura," and "Vaporous Potentialia."
Despite its lack of a specific past tense, Fluorish is a rich and expressive language, encapsulating the essence of the Flumera's existence within its syntax and semantics. Each utterance, each written symbol, is a reflection of their perpetual journey down the waterfall, their vibrant culture, and their relentless quest for knowledge and progress.
"Rivus' Factum" refers to the unalterable truths, fundamental realities, and established laws of the universe. It's a testament to the immutable and enduring aspects of existence.
"Aqua Presentia" is employed for the ongoing happenings, capturing the ebb and flow of life as it unfolds in the present moment.
"Cascade Futura" designates the inevitability of what will come, embodying the Flumera philosophy of life as a journey, constantly progressing and aligning with the waterfall's flow.
"Vaporous Potentialia" represents a realm of possibilities and hypothetical scenarios. It is the linguistic embodiment of dreams, ambitions, and speculative science. Despite its speculative nature, it is deeply ingrained in their language, signifying the Flumera's inherent curiosity and forward-thinking mentality.
Fluorish is an agglutinative language, where words or phrases are created by combining several morphemes or word parts. This results in long, complex words that convey detailed meaning, akin to the intricacies of the waterfall they inhabit. It is also highly context-dependent, with meanings shifting like the play of sunlight on water, based on conversational and environmental context.
Fluorish uses a unique script inspired by the visual patterns of cascading water and foam. This script, referred to as "Aquascript," is carved, written, or artistically represented on various surfaces, from the coral-like building materials to the luminescent skin of the Flumera themselves. This symbolic language, therefore, is not just a means of communication but an integral part of their identity and artistic expression.
Architecture & Clothing: Flumera buildings are crafted from coral-like materials that thrive in fresh water, blending seamlessly into the waterfall. The architecture of Flumenara reflects the challenges and beauty of their environment. Their buildings, carved out of the giant rocks, are shaped to redirect the flow of water, preventing erosion and creating intricate water patterns that add to their aesthetic. Their clothing, woven from plant fibers, respects the sanctity of water, allowing it to flow freely rather than repelling it. Some garments feature bio-luminescent organisms for decoration or formal occasions.
Religion and Philosophy: Aquaridus or Flumera are deeply spiritual, venerating two deities - Aquarivus, embodying the waterfall, and Vitara, representing the life-giving sun. Legends tell of Flumenara's formation, how Aquarivus, aided by Vitara, carved out the great waterfall, creating a sacred living space for the Aquaridus. Their philosophy views the waterfall as a metaphor for time - constantly flowing forward, never backward. Their sayings, such as "One cannot swim against Aquarivus' will" or "In the eyes of Vitara, all water flows equal," and proverbs reflect this worldview. The Flumera philosophy views the waterfall as a symbol of time, perpetually flowing forward, never backward. Their sayings and proverbs echo this worldview, emphasizing the inevitability of flow and the passage of time. Their religion, an intrinsic part of Fluorism, is rooted in the worship of the waterfall. They believe in "Aquarivus", the divine spirit of the waterfall. Every life event, birth, maturation, death, is marked by a ritual involving the water. Death is especially significant, where the deceased is released into the flow, believed to become one with Aquarivus.
Aquarivus: Aquarivus, the deity of water, is said to be the creator of the waterfall. Thus, Aquarivus chose a barren planet, a distant sphere shrouded in darkness. He touched down gently, his divine essence seeping into the parched crust. Then, he began to weep. His tears, filled with celestial energy, poured down, and the first great waterfall of Flumenara was born. For eons, Aquarivus wept, his tears nourishing the lifeless planet. From his sorrow, seeds of life took root, and strange creatures stirred beneath the endless curtain of water. As life blossomed, Aquarivus' sadness ebbed away, replaced with a joy so potent it colored the cascades pink at twilight, a symbol of his affection for the life that now thrived in his tears. Legends recount how Aquarivus, moved by the serene beauty of the cosmos, decided to manifest the elegance of celestial bodies on Flumenara, thus carving the great waterfall with his tears. He is revered for his power, kindness, and wisdom. The waterfalls, rivers, and even the smallest droplet of rain are seen as parts of him. They built their cities along its cascading expanse, each one a tribute to Aquarivus and his sorrowful tears that birthed their world. Thus, Flumenara came into existence, a testament to the divine sorrow of a cosmic deity, the quiet benevolence of a celestial body, and the indomitable spirit of a race shaped by the eternal dance of water and light.
Vitara: Their philosophy, "Fluorism", sees life as a journey down the waterfall. They believe in "Vitara", the force of going forth, which is symbolized by the incessant flow of the waterfall. One of the sayings in Fluorism is "Like water over the precipice, so are we in the grip of Vitara". Their reverence for the natural order of things and the unidirectional flow of time means they never attempt to ascend the waterfall or find ways around it. To them, going back is against Vitara. Because of a historic concidence, Vitara is also the name of their sun.
The Journey: The descent down the waterfall, a life-defining pilgrimage for Flumera, is both physical and spiritual. Comparable to time's relentless flow, Flumera undertaking the descent, willingly embrace the irreversible course of their lives. They leave their origin cities, knowing they can never return, forever carrying the luminous marks of their journey on their Mohawk fins, that get longer each year.
The descent is a rare occurrence among the Flumera, representing a life-defining journey that not everyone has the opportunity or inclination to undertake. As a result, the majority of common folk in Flumenara lead their lives without venturing into the descent. The concept of descending the waterfall, or where their cities are in the height of the waterfall holds little significance to them. They simply carry on with their daily routines, unaffected by the heights or depths of their city within the waterfall.
The immense size of Flumenara, coupled with the force of gravity, leads to variations in downstream speed. In certain cases, traversing to another city downstream can be faster than covering the horizontal distance between cities. This dynamic creates an almost infinite number of potential paths for the Flumera to choose from during their descent. Selecting a particular path becomes akin to making choices in life, where opting for one path means leaving behind others. It is through this mechanism that the lovers in our story can find themselves lost, their paths diverging amidst the vast possibilities offered by Flumenara.
The nobility always enjoys a longer descent journey, often spanning an entire lifetime, because of their position within the waterfall. The more downstream you go, the more common it is for people to take the journey and descent.
Science: The Aquaridus have a unique blend of naturalistic science and esoteric wisdom. They've learnt to harness the hydrokinetic energy of the waterfall to power their cities. However, they never interfere with the waterfall's natural flow. They've also mastered aqua-farming, nurturing unique flora and fauna that thrive in the wet conditions. Their knowledge of the universe is based on their observations of celestial bodies visible from the top of the waterfall.
Communication: Initially, Flumera relied on messages marked on water isotopes, a method devised by a young prodigy named Steamy. This groundbreaking discovery led to an unprecedented form of upstream communication, though the system faced various challenges including environmental impact and social discord. As time went on, the Flumera developed a network of steam streams and wind pipes to efficiently carry the isotopes upstream.
Politics: The Emperor at the peak of the waterfall governs Flumenara. He's both the political and spiritual leader, ensuring the observance of Fluorism principles. Each city has a Fallskeeper, chosen by the Emperor, who oversees the city's operations and is responsible for its inhabitants' descent when it's their time to move on. The higher a city, the more prestigious it is. There's no concept of war or territorial disputes, as cities are bound by their place in the flow, and ascension is considered unnatural.
History: Flumenara has a rich and vibrant history, with the descent tradition, Steamy's revolutionary discovery, and various political events shaping its course. One noteworthy event is the War of Twin Cities, the only cross-city conflict in Flumera history, caused by the unique phenomenon of two cities existing at the same height. Despite occasional disturbances, Flumenara has generally remained a peaceful world. The invention of the steam network system marked a new era, significantly altering Flumera's social, economic, and political landscape.
